In October of last year I attended the SGIA Expo in Las Vegas where I was also invited to present an educational session titled “Understanding Today’s Print Buyers.” The Expo is dedicated to the specialty printing and imaging technology side of things, wide format being the most prevalent, but there was a great mix of everything from applications to vehicles wraps and the show floor was jam packed with attendees. During my presentation I touched upon cross media opportunities for wide format vendors to introduce and work with buyers on. I looked out and realized there were a bunch of blank faces staring back at me. I stopped my presentation and did the drill… who knows what a QR code is? – a few hands. Who knows what Augmented Reality is? – no hands. Who knows what NFC is? – one hand (who had heard about using for mobile payments). Needless to say I realized there was a disconnect, but of all three I pointed out NFC would end up being the most relevant to the wide format world, and the article below illustrates why. Yes, there is a QR code on the poster, but eventually (hopefully!!!) those will go away once all smartphones have NFC enabled.

Samsung tests NFC window shopping in Amsterdam

The phone maker has teamed up with Dutch ecommerce merchant JeansOnline to make exclusive offers to Samsung phone owners who tap a TecTiles tag or scan a QR code at a pop-up store in the city centre.
Samsung has partnered with Dutch merchant JeansOnline, the country’s largest retailer of brand name jeans, and technology provider SalesWindow to promote the use of the NFC functionality in phones including the Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy S III Mini and Galaxy Note II.
At the retailer’s pop-up store on Amsterdam’s Kalverstraat, customers who use a Samsung NFC phone to read a TecTiles NFC sticker in the shop window, or scan a QR code with their camera phone, will receive a coupon entitling them to receive a second item with every purchase, free of charge.
Customers who scan a TecTiles NFC tag in the store and post an image of their purchase on Facebook are also eligible for a chance to win a €100 voucher.
“The goal is to let everyone know the useful features of the NFC functionality in Samsung smartphones,” the phone maker says.
